in seclusion

Apr. 7, 2020

time unbending
          coiled around my arms
deep my thigh time snagged
          the rock my heel dug
wake up after never finding
          lying down awake, awake

a wake of sun, ruby chested
          robins pull time
snatch worm fragments, five
seconds out of the ground

coiled time unbending
          an old buried wristwatch
          from the dirt pulled
the way rock pulls back
from heel
          time cannot be
          wristwatched
rivers we step into
          quartz and glass settled
          to the bottom
of the nest

          unbending is weaving,
          the blue
speckled rock that falls to roll
          under my heel
time pulled back, will never
found
          in the strictures nor
          vessels we tool

This poem was part of collection of “Lockdown Poems” written weekly near the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic. A small number of typewritten prints were offered for sale.

Some of the poems were also printed onto artwork by artist Endriu (J. Andrew Gilbert) in a collaborative art project. You can find Endriu’s art here.
