stolen earth is
stolen field is stolen street is
stolen thought is stolen bliss is
stolen light is stolen time is stolen gold is
stolen home is stolen birth is
stolen land is stolen land is stolen land
is stolen land
This poem was a part of a place-based poetry project by Gabrielle Eisma, an artist and illustrator based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Sixteen local artists were asked to write a poem “expressing the grief and joy of the earth,” as Gabrielle puts it, “speaking for the ground beneath our feet.” Using die stamps, Gabrielle then stamped these poems in sixteen different locations around the Greater Grand Rapids area.
She writes, “Your poem is located on Indian Mounds Dr, on historical Hopewell land, part of Millenium Park now. It is stamped into a log that used to be across the road, cut up and placed along the side by the mounds, an almost-guardian.”
